A Little Book on Poverty and Glory
Dust Jacket Cover
Author Amy McDonald Chapman came to Jolly Design and asked for a dust jacket cover for her letterpressed book that incorporated a commissioned illustration by Linnea Spransy. The cover unfolds into a poster revealing the entire illustration on one side. The opposite side is a restrained one color to contrast the rich colors of the illustration—designed as a reflection of the book’s discussion of the tension between poverty and extravagance. The book cover was chosen as a winner in AIGA’s 50 Books/50 Covers competition in 2007.
From Dreams
Book
Amanda Davis was a young writer from North Carolina who was tradically killed in a plane wreck while I was in graduate school. In typography class, I used her short stories to explore how typographic structure could be manipulated to more closely echo the content. Because Ms. Davis’ stories are surrealistic and dream-like, I combined sleep cycle patterns with the convention of indentations.
Blessings: Ways to Pray in Hope
Booklet
WayMakers needed a design for a pocket-sized booklet that would be usable in prayerwalking situations. The theme of hope plays out across the pages of the booklet with the sun coming over the horizon, with the text making up the foreground. The booklet had a false cover, with a second understated inside cover, that could be used without attracting attention in countries where prayer is a questionable/illegal activity.
